Omaru Creek Brochure - Te Taiao o Tāmaki

Walt: Create A Brochure
The focus of my brochure is How to clean the Omaru Creek. I think that we deserve a clean creek because we are trying so hard. I think everyone in the Glen Innes Community should take care of their environment!

Silhouette cabbage tree - Te Taiao o Tāmaki

Screenshot 2017-03-21 at 2.29.38 PM.png

Last week we made a silhouette cabbage tree. We had a choice of drawing cabbage trees or a bulrushes. We found the cabbage tree and bulrush on the banks of Omaru Creek so we decided to do art on this. As you can see my one isn’t top quality but it works for me. We first painted the pink and the orange. Then I drew the cabbage trees then we painted them black. Have you been to Omaru Creek?

Dragonflies for Omaru Creek - Te Taiao o Tāmaki

Today we made Dragonflies because it was related to our topic. If dragonflies fly around a creek then it is healthy and at Omaru creek doesn't have any dragonflies. Our school will make a bigger one for the creek. This one was only for our classroom wall.

Walt:  conduct a statistical investigation.

We used google maps to determine the walking  distance to 124 Apirana Avenue. This is the entrance to the Omaru Creek that we are studying. The screenshot shows the route, distance and time from my house to the creek. If I had to walk from my house to school then the distance would be 4.8 km. And it will take me 59 minutes to get to school but in car it takes me 11 minutes. I live the Furthest from the creek. Jolie lives the closest at 550m. Harrison lives in East Tamaki so we gave him a home at the glen innes station. So it took him 550m from the train station.Next, we will be calculating the mean and the median. The average or mean distance of the 5 people in my group is 1970m. The median walking distance in the whole classroom is 10. The mode is 1.3km and 1.0km.

Omaru creek - Te Taiao o Tāmaki

Omaru Creek is in Glen Innes and it was in a bad condition. The problem was, the nearby residents were spilling fat and flushing baby wipes. Most people will think nothing happens but the baby wipe cause every rubbish to build up and it forms into a junk pile so that's how a pipe gets blocked. The maintenance crew went for a look at the creek, they found it was rubbish in there and dirty water. So they decided to clean it up.

We can help by not pouring fat into our drains. And we need to stop putting rubbish in the drains outside because the drains are there for a reason and the reason is’t for putting rubbish in.The Omaru Creek isn’t looking like a normal creek so my school will be going to clean up about 20m of the creek.

When we went to the creek to take points we found bushes in the middle of the creek. And rubbish like a fly spray, paper and plastic wrappings.
